 Frequently asked Questions

Q    “There are hundreds of companies selling all kinds of water conditioners. Why should we buy your system?”

A     We are a well known, reputable, locally owned company; we have been in water treatment for 25 years. We have thousands of residential and commercial customers on the west coast of Florida. Ask your friends about Callahan Water, there Callahan Water system has been serving their house for many years. No one can match our quality service, products, and prices.

Q     “What makes your water softener better than others that cost 3 to 4 times the price?”

A     All softeners, regardless of price, should soften your water to O grains of hardness.

Some questions to ask before you buy are:  How long will the units last?  What is the warranty?  How effectively can you get your questions answered and problems solved when service on your system is required?  Does it regenerate based on time or water usage?

Q       “What is hard water?”

A     Hard water is defined as having more than 1 grain per gallon of dissolved minerals in it (usually calcium and magnesium carbonate, and/or manganese).

Q       “I have heard that a water softener adds sodium to the water supply?

A       Yes.  A softener removes the hardness minerals and replaces them with sodium or potassium ions.

Q       “How much sodium is added to the water supply by a softener?”

A       It depends on the amount of hardness of the feed water.

As a comparison

Hardness   =   Sodium Added

1.0 gpg       =   7.5   milligrams/quart

5.0 gpg       =   37.5 milligrams/quart

10.0 gpg     =   75.0 milligrams/quart

20 gpg        =   150.0 milligrams/quart

1 tablespoon of catsup= 204 milligrams of sodium

1 slice of white bread has 161 milligrams of sodium

Q       “Will Reverse Osmosis remove the salt from soft water?”

A       Yes. Most brands will remove 95% or more of the sodium from the water.

Q       “What type of softener should I purchase?”

A       The 2 basic types are:

          1. Tank in tank / cabinet models

          2. Twin tank / Duel tank

Twin tank softeners do not allow for salt fumes to rise into and damage the timer and valve assembly. Cabinet models are popular in mobile homes because they consume less space,

Q       “What size system should I buy?”

A       The hardness level (grains per gallon), iron content, size of the house and size of the family are the determining factors. An improperly sized system can use too much salt or cause maintenance problems in the future.

Q       “Why do you recommend a 2 tank system over tank in tank system”

A       Salt water is corrosive. On a tank in tank / cabinet system the resin tank, controls and valve are al exposed to the salt water and vapors. Over time this will cause damage to the system. We feel that it is far superior to keep the salt tank separate from the rest of the unit.

Q       “How close do the two tanks need to be?”

A       The salt tank can be up to 20 feet away.

Q       “I’ve seen ads that claim (Magnetic) magic softeners would solve my hard water problems. What is your experience with these systems?”

A       Magnetic systems have been around for over 30 years and are not new. Second, if they work so well why doesn’t everyone have one?

There has been extensive research that has yet to find any scientific evidence from a reliable, non biased source that proves these systems to be effective. If you have verified proof that a magnetic system is effective, please send it to us!

Q       “Is there a softener that is sodium free?”

A       “Salt Free” systems means they can use potassium chloride to regenerate instead of sodium chloride. This is true for all water softeners!

Q       “How does the softener work and why does it use salt?”

A       Softeners work by passing hard water through resin beads which have soft (sodium/potassium) ions attached to them. While passing by the beads an ion exchange takes place with the hard mineral ions (calcium/magnesium) trading places with the soft (sodium) ions. After a while the sodium ions are replaced by hardness ions and the resin beads need to be regenerated. The regeneration cycle replaces the sodium ions to the beads and washes the hard water ions to the drain.

Q       “Someone told me that softened water feels slimy?”

A       When you wash your skin and hair with hard water, there is a layer of soap and minerals that is left on your skin (and shower walls). This is what causes the supposed squeaky clean feeling. With soft water, the soap is completely rinsed away leaving just the natural oils your skin produces.
